Overview

The Master of Terrorism and Security Studies will develop and enhance the student’s knowledge of complex terrorism and security issues, and foster a holistic understanding of counter terrorism responses within the terrorism threat nexus. Students will develop an advanced and integrated body of knowledge regarding terrorism theory, frameworks, and concepts, and will apply this knowledge to historical, contemporary, and emerging terrorism threats, with reference to recent attacks and developments. Students will refine their expertise in research through the development and implementation of research methods and methodologies, in order to produce empirically and theoretically informed assessments. Students will critically evaluate abstract concepts in conjunction with evidence to challenge existing knowledge, and advance sustainable counter terrorism recommendations. Students will demonstrate leadership through critically considering professional practice, as well as objectively and effectively communicating with specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:
1.
Demonstrate an advanced and integrated body of complex knowledge regarding terrorism drivers, enablers, and causes in order to evaluate recent developments and provide strategic insight into historical, contemporary, and emerging threats in the terrorism and security field
2.
Synthesise and critically apply an advanced and integrated body of knowledge regarding concepts, theories and principles, to assess subnational terrorist operations, organisations, networks, and radicalisation, to evaluate multimodal counter terrorism approaches, including recent developments, in terrorism and security contexts
3.
Apply critical thinking skills with autonomy to evaluate abstract ideas, concepts, and intelligence, with reference to recent developments, in order to make threat assessments and provide insight in a range of terrorism and security contexts
4.
Utilise appropriate research methodologies to undertake extensive research, and investigate and forecast patterns and relationships through the exploitation of literature, datasets and open source intelligence to critically respond to a range of existing and emerging professional and industry requirements
5.
Critically evaluate responses to terrorism and security issues and ideas in the context of personal values, professional practice, and ethical decision-making
6.
Synthesise and appropriately articulate complex information and abstract ideas pertaining to terrorism and security which effectively informs and influences a variety of terrorism and security stakeholders

Autonomously develop and demonstrate knowledge leadership by communicating professionally, critically, and objectively, in order to influence change, challenge accepted norms, and innovate professional practice
