Graduate Diploma of Psychology

Overview

The Graduate Diploma of Psychology is a two-year part-time course offered online. The course aims are based on the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council’s Accreditation Standards for Psychology Programs (2019) and the Australian Qualifications Framework (Second Edition, January 2013). In general, the course aims to provide graduates with both the academic requirements for further study and training as required for registration as a Psychologist (the “professional" aim) and an understanding of the basis of human behaviour (the “disciplinary” aim). Specifically, these include critical and other analytical skills as well as professional service-directed skills that will have relevance to a broad range of employment areas including research. Further, the Graduate Diploma of Psychology aims to provide graduates of a cognate discipline with an advanced level of knowledge and skills in psychology required for further professional study.

Credit Arrangements

Credit for psychology subjects taken at other institutions can only be granted for equivalent subjects in APAC accredited courses.

Credit in the Graduate Diploma of Psychology will normally be given for any individual psychology subjects studied within the last ten years that were part of an APAC accredited university undergraduate program.The maximum number of credits is four subjects but no more than three of the following subjects will be credited (PSY461 Advanced Research Methods and Statistics in Psychology, PSY464 Psychopathology, PSY465 Psychology of Personality, PSY467 Cognition, PSY468 Psychology of Learning PSY469 Qualitative Research Methods). Students should indicate which subjects they would like to receive credit for and provide a subject description from the handbook.

Students whose psychology major is more than 10 years old will normally meet prerequisites for entry only.

Where students did not receive grades of Credit or better in previously studied psychology subjects, careful consideration should be given to whether or not credit is applied for for those subjects as they may lower the overall GPA for entry to fourth year programs.
Also where a student's PSY101 and PSY102 (or equivalent) is more than 10 years old students should obtain a recent copy of a first year psychology text and re-familiarise themselves with the basic principles of psychology.

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:
