Overview

The Graduate Diploma of Terrorism and Security Studies will develop and enhance the student’s knowledge of terrorism and security, and foster integrated understandings of the counter-terrorism responses within the complex terrorism threat nexus. Students will develop an advanced and systematic body of knowledge regarding terrorism theory, frameworks, and concepts, and will apply this knowledge to historical, contemporary, and emerging terrorism threats. Students will critically investigate patterns and relationships in terrorism in order to challenge existing knowledge. Students will select and implement appropriate research methods to produce empirically-supported and objective research assessments for communication with specialist and non-specialist audiences. Students will develop knowledge leadership by reflecting on ethical and professional practice in response to industry needs.

Enrolment pattern

Due to the flexibility within this set of courses, there is no prescribed enrolment pattern. Students must complete core subject GPM417 first, but may then choose the order in which they undertake the remaining subjects. Students must also meet any pre-requisite requirements of elective subjects.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this course, graduates will be able to:

Demonstrate an advanced and systematic body of knowledge regarding terrorism drivers, enablers, and causes in order to analyse and provide insight into historical, contemporary, and emerging threats in the terrorism and security field

Synthesise and apply an advanced and systematic body of knowledge of concepts, theory and principles to analyse subnational terrorist organisations, operations, and networks, to assess counter terrorism approaches in terrorism and security contexts
3.
Apply critical thinking skills to analyse complex ideas, concepts, and intelligence, in order to make threat assessments in a range of terrorism and security contexts
4.
Select and apply appropriate online research methodols to undertake wide-ranging research and investigate patterns and relationships through the exploitation of literature, datasets and open source intelligence to respond to a range of complex professional and industry requirements

Critically analyse responses to terrorism and security issues and ideas in the context of personal values, professional practice, and ethical decision-making
6.
Synthesise knowledge and theory to communicate effectively on terrorism and security threats to inform and provide insight to a variety of terrorism and security stakeholders
